Log of repairs done to Elif’s Laptop

System info

  • 2010 13” MBP
  • MacBookPro8,1
  • 2x2GB DDR3 SODIMM @ 1333MHz
  • Supports OS X 10.10

  • Won’t boot
  • Bad sounds reported on boot attempt
  • Apple store technician reported drive unreadable (“It crashed his test machine” - pssshhh)

Repair plan

Repair system

  • Make a 10.10 install disk
    • DL
    • image to extra HDD (caddy)
  • Swap damaged MBP drive for fresh drive (250GB, from Lauren’s dead MB)
  • Boot install disk and install OSX
  • Check memory reported (4GB)
  • Run Apple Hardware Test (version 3A222: “No trouble found.”)

Recover data

  • Put damaged HDD into externally-powered USB caddy (extra power may help with mechanical issues)
  • Attempt to mount and backup home directory contents
  • Rsync backed up copy over new home directory
  • Configure Time Machine backups to external (500GB) drive

Log of unrecoverable files:

alexandria% sudo rsync -a /media/Macintosh\ HD/Users/eris /home/eric/eris
rsync: readlink_stat("/media/Macintosh HD/Users/eris/Library/Caches/") failed: Input/output error (5)
rsync: readdir("/media/Macintosh HD/Users/eris/Library/Keychains"): Input/output error (5)
rsync: readlink_stat("/media/Macintosh HD/Users/eris/Library/Mail/V2/") failed: Input/output error (5)
rsync: readlink_stat("/media/Macintosh HD/Users/eris/Library/Preferences/") failed: Input/output error (5)
rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1165) [sender=3.1.1]

Only Keychains seems like a significant data loss. Keychains contains all stored passwords on the system.

Steps NOT Taken

  • Didn’t take a full forensic image of the damaged drive , since AFAIK all the valuable data was in the home directory. This is still an option.

Other notes

  • Trackpad was jumping around a lot with no input. Cleaned screen and trackpad solvent to resolve.
  • I still have the old drive. Should give it back to Elif.
